Waste and recycling professionals work hard every day to protect the environment for all of us. We’ve all seen the drivers who collect our waste and recycling, but there are many more workers behind the scenes. All of them deserve our thanks for the work they do.

A Fulfilling Career is the Key to Happiness

Commercial Driver Cuauhtemoc “Temo” Ramirez shares insights on cultivating meaningful connections while advancing his career within a family-owned and operated company

Temo Ramirez has been with Athens Services for 17 years and is currently a Commercial Driver in the City of Norwalk. He followed the footsteps of his brother and started a career in the waste industry 30 years ago as a recycling sorter at Norcal Waste Systems, which was later acquired by Athens.

Over the course of his career, Temo worked his way up to a scout driver and later a commercial driver.  He has found great joy working in the industry and this passion only deepened during his time at Athens – where he describes a family-centered work culture.

On his current route of 5 years, Temo has also formed strong relationships with his customers. His favorite part of the day is interacting with them and providing the best service possible. He even took the Mayor of Norwalk on a ridealong to show her a day in the life of an Athens driver. Temo cherishes his relationship with the customers he serves and even sees them as family.

“I can confidently say my customers love me,” said Temo jokingly. “Providing great service is not just about leaving the bins to their liking, but going the extra mile and getting to know them.”

Thought his time in the industry, Temo has not only grown in his trade but has watched technology and practices evolve. He finds his role very fulfilling and sees himself retiring with Athens. With the company’s rapid growth through Southern California over recent years, he says that Athens is the place to be.

“Athens is taking over the world and I want to be a part of it,” said Temo.

In his free time, Temo enjoys traveling, relaxing at home, and sharing a drink with his wife and high school sweetheart of 32-years, Alma. The couple fell in love at El Monte High School and still reside in the city. They share five children, Leilani (28), Alfred (24), Joana (22), Erick (20), and Joey (14). Temo hopes that in the future one of his sons will join the Athens family and carry on his legacy.
