Athens Services is fortunate to have some of the best workers in the industry. We wish we could personally recognize all 1,500+ Athens employees for National Waste and Recycling Workers Week. Here, we present five employees nominated by their managers for truly exemplifying The Athens Way Culture.

George Campista, Utility Class C Driver
LA South Yard, Torrance

George has been with Athens for seven years. He drives “scout” and “burro” trucks in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, Palos Verdes Estates, and Redondo Beach. These trucks are smaller, more nimble, and are able to navigate the narrow and winding streets of South Bay cities.

George says his goal is to “provide great service for our customers and work safely while keeping the community clean.”

What he would like people to know about the work he does: “The work can be hard and strenuous at times; some people think servicing trash is easy. I find it funny when random individuals approach me and say ‘Oh, this a kick-back (easy) job,’ because they see me driving around in my scout truck. I work hard to strive for success and make my parents proud of everything I do in life, even though both have passed away.”

Claudia Fuentes, Transfer Driver
City of Industry Yard

Claudia joined Athens in 2013. She drives a transfer truck to haul organic and green waste from Redondo Beach to Athens’ Crown Recycling Services facility in Sun Valley.

In addition, she transfers solid waste from Athens’ City of Industry materials recovery facility to the Southeast Resource Recovery Facility in Long Beach.

What she likes most about her job: “I enjoy driving to different locations daily and being outdoors. And I appreciate the opportunity to progress in my career.”

What she would like people to know about the work she does: “I make it my goal every day to move solid waste and organic waste from our customers to the proper processing facility safely and efficiently.”

Juan Gutierrez, Bin Shop Painter
Van Norman Division, Montebello

Juan joined Athens in 2015. He works hard to keep Athens’ commercial bins in tip-top shape, prepping the containers, painting them, and maintaining the painting booth.

What he would like people to know about the work he does: “I take pride in my work so that customers receive a good, quality painted bin.”

What he likes most about his job: That I feel comfortable working at Athens. I also like that there are a lot of opportunities to grow within the organization.”

What motivates him: “My family. I think of them and it pushes me to work more and try harder.”

Jose Luis Rodriguez, Commercial Driver
Salt Lake Yard, City of Industry

Jose has been with Athens since 2004. He services commercial customers in the communities of
Pomona, Rowland Heights, and Walnut, as well as Mt. San Antonio College. He enjoys servicing the
community and building relationships with his customers. His goal is to “take care of the customers I
service by always practicing safe driving.”

What he would like people to know about the work he does: “I’m super-positive and always try to go the extra mile. I make the effort to communicate with my customers to see if there is anything they need beyond getting their trash picked up.”

Jose says he is motivated by his family “and the fact that I love my job, and have great relationships with my colleagues.”

His advice to new drivers: “Do your job to the best of your ability and do it for your family.”

Luis Santa Cruz, Bin Delivery Driver
Peoria Division, Sun Valley

Luis is a new member of the Athens family, with a little over a year under his belt. He drives a flatbed truck and delivers containers to the City of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

What he would like people to know about the work he does: “I enjoy learning new things every day and trying to find ways to improve. I am motivated by making a better future for my family and me.”
