Back to Conscious Rule: Tips for the Zero Waste School

Whether your children are back at school or distance learning while they wait for schools to reopen, it’s important that they have the right tools for learning. It’s equally important to reduce waste when buying school supplies.

Whether your children are back at school or distance learning while they wait for schools to reopen, it’s important that they have the right tools for learning. It’s equally important to reduce waste when buying school supplies.

Here are some tips to save waste, money, and time.

Purchase quality items, buy in bulk, and invest in online tools to reduce waste and save money in the long run.

Focus on buying quality items that can be reused year after year. It is an easy way to reduce your environmental footprint.

Purchasing a high quality backpack, for example, makes a huge difference. The backpack will not tear as easily, can be washed when needed without deteriorating, and will age well with your child, unlike your daughter’s “Trolls” backpack.

Instead of buying several low-quality, fast fashion clothing items or shoes, consider buying high-quality pieces that will last throughout the year and beyond. The best practice would be to purchase secondhand, high-quality items. Often, thrift stores will carry top quality materials for a fraction of the original price.

Buy in bulk, avoiding plastic when possible. Buy plastic alternatives when possible; for example, highlighters made of wood that can be sharpened instead of the classic plastic highlighter. Buying bulk items like 100% recycled paper will save money in the long run.

As a lot of learning has moved online, consider investing in online materials and tools. If there is an online option, prioritize that. For example, instead of buying hard copy books, try renting online instead. Websites such as Audible and Chegg have book rental subscriptions and an extensive library. Materials online generate less waste, use less energy, are more convenient, and often cost less.

Incorporating these tips will drastically reduce your waste and energy footprint while saving you money. To learn more tips to reduce waste, visit our Instagram or Facebook page.
