Breaking Barriers: Jennifer Cilloniz on 27 Years in the Industry

Waste and recycling professionals work hard every day to protect the environment for all of us. We’ve all seen the drivers who collect our waste and recycling, but there are many more workers behind the scenes. All of them deserve our thanks for the work they do.

Breaking Barriers: Jennifer Cilloniz on 27 Years in the Industry

Athens Services proudly recognizes Jennifer Cilloniz for Women’s History Month

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions and impact women have made throughout history. While waste and recycling services has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated industry, women have created a space for themselves to build thriving careers, step into leadership roles, and drive the future of the industry. At Athens, we take pride in having courageous and powerful women not only helping shape our workforce, but also making an impact in the communities we serve.

Senior Director of Program Compliance Jennifer Cilloniz

Athens Team Member since 2007

Jennifer brings 27 years of waste industry experience to the Athens team, including 17 years with the company. Her background spans accounting, billing, sales, major account management, and hands-on waste sorting. She joined Athens as a Zero Waste Manager as part of the NorCal Waste acquisition.

For the past five years, Jennifer has served as Senior Director of Program Compliance. She oversees Athens’ outreach efforts throughout the San Gabriel Valley and works closely with Recycling Coordinators and Municipal Account Managers to educate community members on proper waste sorting practices. Most importantly, she and her team is responsible for helping customers and businesses comply with state legislation.

With nearly three decades of industry experience, Jennifer is passionate about encouraging more women to consider a career in waste

“Everyone thinks this is a man’s industry, but women can do just as much—if not more,” she says.

“The industry is opening up to women. We have female drivers now and women in every department. We should embrace this field—it’s going to be around for a long time.”

As a first-generation Peruvian American, Jennifer is deeply committed professional growth and is proud of her career accomplishments. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.

Jennifer has lived in La Mirada for 12 years with her husband, Dan, daughter Jaylene (27), and their dog, Bailey. She and Dan met in the waste industry, making “trash talk” a household topic.

She enjoys yoga with her daughter and coaching her niece’s cheer team. This season, she’s taking a break, but still cheers on the LA Dodgers or plays golf.
