Meet Cynthia: Inspiring Sustainability in the Harbor Zone

Cynthia Agustin, Recycling Coordinator for Athens Services’ Harbor Zone, proudly serves the communities of San Pedro, Torrance, and the Harbor Corridor. For more than three years, she has empowered residents and businesses to improve their waste-sorting habits, supporting Athens’ mission to divert materials from the landfill.

With a passion for sustainability and community engagement, Cynthia helps drive positive environmental change, one conversation at a time.

A Lifelong Passion for the Environment

Cynthia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science and Policy, with a minor in Geography, from California State University, Long Beach. During her time at CSULB, she discovered Athens Services—a family-owned and operated leader in waste and recycling—through a classmate who introduced her to the Recycling Coordinator role.

Although no immediate openings were available near her at the time, Cynthia’s commitment to building a career rooted in environmental stewardship never wavered. She kept Athens on her radar until the ideal opportunity in the Harbor Zone finally appeared.

Making an Impact Through Waste Diversion Education

Cynthia always knew she wanted a career that made a real difference. Working in the waste and recycling industry opened her eyes to how crucial sustainability efforts are behind the scenes.

“When you think of a waste hauler, you don’t think about sustainability,” Cynthia said

“But working for Athens has been eye-opening. Our goal is to keep as much waste as possible out of landfills. It’s incredibly rewarding to help change people’s habits and make a direct impact—that’s exactly what I wanted to do.”

As a Recycling Coordinator, Cynthia educates customers on the importance of proper waste sorting—highlighting that it’s not only a legal requirement but an essential step toward protecting the environment.

Building a Future in Sustainability

Looking ahead, Cynthia is excited to further her career in sustainability. She is considering pursuing a master’s degree and exploring various environmental specializations. Long-term, she envisions expanding her impact by joining Athens’ Sustainability Department— continuing her journey toward building more sustainable, vibrant communities across Southern California.

Life Outside of Work

When she’s not leading sustainability initiatives, Cynthia lives an active lifestyle in Downtown Long Beach with her American Shorthair cat, Smokey. She enjoys hiking, hitting the gym, and spending time outdoors. At home, she loves rewatching her favorite Marvel movies—especially Captain America and Spider-Man—and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.
