Since joining the Athens Services outreach team in 2022, Shanice has helped communities across the San Gabriel Valley recycle smarter, reduce landfill waste, and stay compliant with California’s recycling laws.
After earning her Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Occupational Health from California State University, Northridge, Shanice explored opportunities to launch her career in sustainability. When she found a LinkedIn listing for a Recycling Coordinator role at Athens Services—a family-owned and operated leader in waste and recycling—she seized the opportunity and never looked back.
Today, Shanice serves customers in South El Monte, Norwalk, South Pasadena, and San Gabriel. She helps residents and businesses right-size their containers, comply with state recycling laws, and reduce landfill waste—all while building strong community relationships through Athens’ Salt Lake outreach team.
Shanice credits Athens’ supportive leadership for helping her refine valuable communication skills.
“My managers have always encouraged me to participate in presentations and booth events, which has been incredibly helpful,” Shanice said.
“Learning to connect with both adults and kids in a variety of settings has helped me overcome my fear of public speaking.”
Forming authentic relationships within the community is one of Shanice’s favorite parts of her role.
“I enjoy getting to know different cities and their business owners. Hearing their stories helps me guide conversations about recycling compliance and recommend the best solutions for their waste needs.”
Shanice appreciates the balance her position offers between indoor and outdoor work environments. Looking ahead, she envisions stepping into a leadership role at Athens to continue expanding sustainability outreach efforts educating communities.
Shanice lives in Pomona with her mother, Sylvia; her siblings, Roy and Alishanie; her niece, Naylani; and their energetic pets—cat Lola and dogs Fluffy, Anabelle, Bella, and Mochi. She enjoys discovering new coffee shops, thrift shopping, hiking, and photographing scenic landscapes and vintage finds.
