Waste and recycling professionals work hard every day to protect the environment for all of us. We’ve all seen the drivers who collect our waste and recycling, but there are many more workers behind the scenes. All of them deserve our thanks for the work they do.

Athens Services is pleased to announce that Executive Vice President Gary Clifford has been voted the 2022 Glendora Citizen of the Year.

Gary was honored at the 73rd annual banquet on April 20 at the Glendora Country Club. Presented by the Glendora Chamber of Commerce, the award recognizes Gary’s contributions to the well-being and economic development of the Glendora community.

“The best thing about being a part of a community is getting involved,” said Gary. “My role is to complete the loop of community service and volunteerism to help make Glendora a safe place to live, work, and play.”

Whether Athens is providing philanthropic support or waste containers for events, Gary’s commitment to service exemplifies his dedication to the Glendora community, its people, and The Athens Way.

“I’m thankful for my Athens family, the Glendorans that I served with in the City Council and Chamber Board, as well as all the community organizations and members that supported me,” Gary said as to who he credits for the honor. “I’m also really proud of our first responders and all the time and effort that we put into revitalizing the city.”

Gary has consistently prioritized the well-being and interests of Glendorans throughout his 40+ years of living in the city. Whether it be through his efforts to preserve the Foothills or his leadership within the school board to create a conducive environment for students to thrive, he is steadfast in his commitment to better the community.

“Gary does not expect anything in return [when turning to him for support],” said 2018 Glendora Citizen of the Year recipient and Soroptimist Azusa/Glendora Director & Event Chair, Rose Wentz. “He is there to protect and care for everyone and is always ready to help.”

Gary’s impact in the community and commitment to Glendora’s future has solidified a legacy that will be felt for years to come.

“My work with the school board encapsulates everything I’ve done to this point and helps set the stage for the next generation,” said Gary.
