Educating Customers Through Town Halls, Presentations, and Events

California cities are taking steps to manage food waste in order to comply with SB 1383. The new Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) reduction state law to reduce food waste and greenhouse gases went into effect January 2022.

Cities are ultimately responsible for enforcing compliance with the regulation but Athens Services is collaborating with them to help with outreach and education.

“This is a big change for our cities. Ongoing outreach and education are vital. Athens is playing a vital role in helping them reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food and green waste, and to be in compliance,” said Athens Director of Program Compliance and Outreach Jennifer Cilloniz.

Teams of recycling coordinators have visited Southern California cities this year to provide customers with onsite training and educational materials. As a result, commercial businesses and multi-family dwellings in such diverse communities as Norwalk, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, San Gabriel, South El Monte, Beverly Hills, Azusa, Thousand Oaks, West Hollywood, and Santa Paula have either fully implemented SB 1383 or soon will.

Athens also has partnered with Chambers of Commerce to give presentations and answer questions. In cities such as Azusa, Norwalk, Glendora, West Covina, Covina, and Monrovia, Athens has presented information for residents in public “town hall” meetings. Recycling coordinators have held events and made presentations at schools.

“Children are our best teachers. They help remind their parents how to sort food waste and why it is important,” Athens Government Affairs Manager Daniela Ojeda said.
