For more than seven years, Javier has been a dedicated team member at Athens Services—growing his career in the waste and recycling industry, building stronger connections with neighborhoods, and helping local customers improve their waste sorting habits.
Before joining Athens, Javier worked in retail but was searching for something more meaningful—a career that allowed him to keep serving people while supporting sustainability. In 2018, a friend referred him to Athens. After learning more about the company’s family-owned and operated culture and commitment to communities, Javier knew he had found the right place.
He began his journey as a Recycling Coordinator in the Harbor service zone as part of the recycLA program, working with businesses in Wilmington, San Pedro, and the Harbor Gateway.
Eager to expand his understanding of post-collection services, Javier transitioned to Operations Lead at the Sun Valley Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). There, he gained hands-on experience in waste processing, learning how recyclable materials are sorted, processed, and diverted from landfills.
While he enjoyed learning the back-end processes of the industry, Javier missed interacting with customers face to face.
“Even on weekends, I couldn’t help noticing how businesses were handling their trash,” said Javier.
When a Recycling Coordinator position opened in the North Central service area, he returned to the field with renewed purpose and deeper industry knowledge.
For the past two and a half years, Javier has proudly served the Mid-Wilshire and Miracle Mile communities, helping customers better understand what can be recycled and how they can reduce waste.
“My customer service skills have really grown. I approach every conversation differently—whether someone’s new to recycling or already well-informed,” shared Javier.
Javier is excited about the future and looks forward to continuing his journey with Athens.
“I’m excited to grow with the company. Athens has evolved so much, and I want to be part of what’s next.”
An East Los Angeles resident, Javier has been with his partner Alejandra for 16 years. The couple shares a son, Ulises (21) and three dogs, Viv and Princess who are rescues and Molly who was a gift from family member.
In his free time, he enjoys going to reggaetón, rock, and Mexican music concerts. A dedicated Los Angeles sports fan, he tries to catch at least three Dodgers games a season and always cheers on the Lakers, Chargers, and Los Angeles FC.
Javier encourages anyone looking for a fulfilling, hands-on career in environmental services to consider joining the Athens family.
“Come in with an open mind and be ready to learn. Recycling is about so much more than bottles and cans. It’s a system—and once you understand it, you’ll see how much of a difference you can make.”
Javier’s story is proof that one career move can lead to a lifetime of impact—for people and the planet.
