Leading with Purpose: Jennifer Pelayo’s Role in Strengthening Athens’ Workforce

Waste and recycling professionals work hard every day to protect the environment for all of us. We’ve all seen the drivers who collect our waste and recycling, but there are many more workers behind the scenes. All of them deserve our thanks for the work they do.

Leading with Purpose: Jennifer Pelayo’s Role in Strengthening Athens’ Workforce

Athens Services proudly recognizes Jennifer Pelayo for Women’s History Month

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions and impact women have made throughout history. While waste and recycling services has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated industry, women have created a space for themselves to build thriving careers, step into leadership roles, and drive the future of the industry. At Athens, we take pride in having courageous and powerful women not only helping shape our workforce but also making an impact in the communities we serve.

Senior Director of Human Resources Jennifer Pelayo

Athens Team Member since 2023

With 18 years of dedicated Human Resources experience, Jennifer oversees benefits, compensation, and HR partners at each Athens yard. She began her HR journey as a grocery store cashier right out of high school, progressively working her way up to a prominent HR leadership position. Jennifer earned her master’s degree in HR Management from the University of Southern California.

While pursuing her master’s degree, a professional connection opened the door for her to speak with a recruiter about an opportunity at Athens. Before making the leap, Jennifer researched the company and was drawn to Athens’ commitment to family values, as well as fond memories of her childhood home that was serviced by Athens.

For Jennifer, the most rewarding part of her job is developing processes and procedures that not only strengthen the HR team but benefit team members across the organization. She finds it impactful to learn from individuals throughout Athens, gaining insight into how they have grown and contributed to Athens’ success.

“One of the biggest and most powerful lessons I’ve learned in any industry is being comfortable in who I am—as a woman, a professional, a mother, and a wife,” she shares.

“Finding a healthy balance and knowing my priorities has helped me realize that no matter what responsibilities I have outside of work, I can still make an impact in any organization.”

Jennifer lives in La Habra with her husband, Gregory. The couple has been together for 20 years and married for 13. They are proud parents to two boys, Gregory (10) and Gabriel (6). She is a dedicated member of Freedom City Church in Whittier and enjoys concerts, sporting events, and cheering on her sons in their flag and tackle football games. Though she’s a devoted LA Lakers, LA Dodgers, and Las Vegas Raiders fan, nothing beats watching her kids play.
