Carlos Cuyan and his daughter Nancy are proud to be working for a family-owned company like Athens Services that has strong family values. Carlos takes care of residential and business customers, while Nancy helps businesses comply with State recycling laws like SB 1383, designed to help reduce greenhouse gases in California.
Carlos joined Athens in 2000 as a driver and eventually became a foreman. He is responsible for overseeing other drivers and fills in when needed to ensure the highest standards of safety and service are followed.
An opportunity to help the community and the environment
He became interested in the waste and recycling industry because of the opportunities that existed.
“These included not only employment but opportunities for the community and for the environment.”
Carlos plays a vital role at Athens in helping the environment in cities like Hermosa Beach and Palos Verdes.
“I believe that the knowledge I have of these cities due to working in them for so many years has proved that I can be vital. I feel happy when the clients are happy.”
He’s worked at Athens for 21 years and his favorite part about Athens is the people.
“The way we stick together and we have all learned that we can rely on one another.”
Walking in her father’s footsteps
Nancy joined Athens as a recycling coordinator (RC) earlier this year. She went to Cerritos and Cypress College. Her primary duties are to educate customers on the importance of recycling, reducing waste, and how to comply with the newest state mandates.
Her favorite part of the job?
“Being able to connect with customers. I meet so many members of each community.”
For both Carlos and Nancy, family is a big part of their lives; they enjoy going to the river, beach, and camping. They appreciate that Athens also values family.
