Billing Compliance Specialist Darlene Nino reached her 40-year anniversary in the waste industry, a remarkable milestone that reflects a career full of growth, hard work, and persistence.
Darlene’s career in the waste industry began in 1984 at West Covina Disposal, which was later acquired by Athens Services in 1992. Prior to joining the Athens team, she spent nearly a decade as an Accounts Receivable Clerk and Office Manager. Throughout the years, Darlene has held several roles, ranging from reception to inside and outside sales, as well credit and collections—demonstrating her versatility and commitment to continuous career growth. Today, she is a key member of Athens’ billing department.
Since 2017, Darlene has served as a Billing Compliance Specialist, a critical role requiring ongoing parcel audits to guarantee accurate customer billing. Additionally, she analyzes and verifies customer data to ensure invoices are properly recorded and in alignment with city requirements
Reflecting on her time at Athens, Darlene expresses deep appreciation and gratitude for the support she’s received throughout the years, especially as a working mother. While at Athens, she gave birth to four of her children.
“Athens made it easy to balance being a parent with fulfilling my work responsibilities,” said Darlene. “I’m so thankful. I don’t think I could’ve done it without support from the Athens family. You just don’t find companies like this.”
After 40 years in the waste industry, Darlene has no plans to slow down.
“I love the people here and I really enjoy my job,” she shared. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to give 110% to a company that gives just as much back to their people.”
Darlene lives in San Dimas with her husband of 12 years, Richard. The couple, who fell in love in 2000, shares a blended family of seven children and two grandchildren, Italia (4) and Santino (2).
Outside of work, Darlene enjoys going to the theater, diving, cheering for her favorite hockey team–the Los Angeles Kings, and open-water fishing. She once caught a 100-pound tuna and dreams of one day reeling in a marlin. Darlene was also a former roller derby skater and competed on three teams between 1998 to 2014.
For anyone considering a career at Athens, Darlene offers this advice:
“Go with the flow, don’t be afraid of change, and be ready for growth—it comes fast!”
