To ensure your trash is collected, please make sure your barrels are out the night before trash day or by 6:00 a.m. the day of service. Please remove all carts by sunset on your service day.

Holiday Schedule

Holidays create a one-day delay in collection service. Athens Services observes the following holidays:

New Year’s Day

Memorial Day

Independence Day

Labor Day

Thanksgiving

Christmas Day

If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, waste collection services will not be delayed.

Billing

Billing for solid waste management services was transitioned from the City of Whittier to Athens Services on Wednesday, November 1, 2017.

Athens utilizes a different billing timeline than the City of Whittier, which billed all customers bi-monthly and in arrears. Athens Services bills Whittier residential customers quarterly, in advance.

Our Customer Service department is happy to answer any questions to help clarify the billing system. We can be reached at (866) 260-4667, during 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and 7:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

What Goes In My Container?

RECYCLING

The RECYCLING container is for the collection of commingled recyclables such as aluminum/tin foil and trays (clean); aseptic containers, juice boxes and milk cartons; cans (aluminum, bi-metal, and tin); cardboard; envelopes; glass bottles and jars; junk mail; magazines; all metal; newspaper; office paper; paperback books; paper grocery bags; all clean plastic bags and film plastic (grocery, dry cleaning, packaging, etc.); plastic containers (1-7); shredded paper (bagged); and wrapping paper (with no metal). NO FOOD WASTE, LIQUIDS, ORGANICS, PACKAGING PEANUTS, PET WASTE, TRASH, OR YARD TRIMMINGS.

LANDFILL

The LANDFILL container is for non-recyclable trash such as bathroom waste, candy bar wrappers, ceramics/porcelain, chip bags, cigarette butts, diapers, disposable gloves, foam to-go containers and cups, food scraps, juice pouches, packaging peanuts, palm fronds, paper or boxes soiled with grease or food residue, pet waste, succulents and cacti, yucca leaves and other solid waste materials considered to be no longer of use.

ORGANICS

The ORGANICS container is for collection of green waste only including plant matter, tree trimmings, and yard trimmings. NO BUILDING MATERIALS; CACTI, SUCCULENTS, or YUCCA; CONCRETE; DIRT; FOOD SCRAPS; PALM FRONDS; PET WASTE; SAND; STONES; TRASH; OR TREE TRIMMINGS (LARGER THAN 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER OR 4 FEET IN LENGTH).

DO NOT PLACE IN CONTAINERS:

State law prohibits the disposal of hazardous material into your containers.  For proper disposal options, click here. We also ask that you do not place bulky items, construction debris, electronic waste, or automotive parts in your containers. For bulky items disposal options, click here.

Electronic Waste Examples:

Electronics can include those devices that utilize electrical wiring, plug into  an electric outlet, or take a battery or light bulb. Examples include (but are not limited to): computers and accessories, circuit boards, extension cords, flash lights, microwaves, phones, stereos, and televisions.

Construction and Demolition:

Waste material generated during the construction, renovation or demolition of a location cannot be placed in your containers. To order temporary service for construction projects, click hereThe most common materials are:  concrete, wood, drywall, asphalt shingles, and asphalt pavement.

Hazardous Waste

It is illegal to dispose of hazardous materials into your containers, down the drain, or by abandonment.

Hazardous Waste is any product labeled toxic, poisonous, corrosive, flammable, combustible, or an irritant.

Examples include (but are not limited to): antifreeze; automotive fluids; cleaning products; compressed gas cylinders (full or empty); fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides; paint; pharmaceuticals; pool chemicals; sharps waste; solvents; and more.

Bulky Items

Athens Services encourages reuse and donation of bulky items whenever possible.Bulky waste collection is available for single and multi-family residents with barrel service. Bulky waste includes large items that do not fit into barrels or bins such as:

Water heaters

Furnaces

Bed springs

Mattresses

Dressers

Couches

Washers

Dryers

Stoves

Tables

Chairs

Refrigerators

Freezers

Air conditioners

Patio furniture

Pick-ups will occur on your regularly scheduled collection day. Items should be placed curbside (not in the street). To schedule a pick-up, please call Athens Services at (855) 557-1007, or complete a Request Services form and select “Bulky Item Pick-Up.”

IMPORTANT NOTE: TO PROTECT CHILDREN, PLEASE REMOVE OR SECURE ALL APPLIANCE DOORS.

Holiday Tree Recycling

Holiday trees are 100% recyclable! A
thens Services collects holiday trees each year, from the day after Christmas through the third Saturday in January, on your normal pickup day. Trees are delivered to various landfills to be used as mulch or cover material, or to Athens’ American Organics compost facility in Victorville.

 

Tips to ensure your tree is properly collected:

  • Remove stands, ornaments, lights and tinsel.
  • Place holiday trees next to your regular trash containers.
  • Trees over 6 feet in length must be cut in half.
  • Trees with flocking or fire retardants ARE NOT acceptable.
  • If you miss the date for recycling, please cut up your tree and place it in your yard waste container(s).

 

Please help keep our parks clean and safe during the holidays. If you see anyone illegally dumping holiday trees, please call your city’s Police Department.

Discounts

  • Utility Users’ Tax Exemption (UUT) Qualified Discount: Residential customers who apply and qualify will be entitled to a discount on solid waste collection fees. For more information, call the Whittier City Clerk’s Office at (562) 567-9860.
  • Senior Discount: Senior citizens are eligible for a rate reduction of 10%. The senior citizen must be the head of the household of the residential premises that receive collection services, be at least sixty-two (62) years of age and must receive supplemental Social Security benefits. For more information, contact Athens at (888) 336-6100.
  • Active Military Discount: Active members of the military are eligible for a rate reduction of 10%. An active member of the military may be stationed away from home for periods of time. This rate reduction will apply to the property so long as the military member maintains the property as his or her permanent residence. This discount does not apply to charges for additional carts, temporary bin service or temporary roll-off service. For more information, contact Athens at (888) 336-6100.

Material and Reuse Donation

Instead of discarding unwanted items, give them a new life through donation.

Not only will you reduce waste to landfills and save resources, you may also be helping someone in need. See below for local organizations that accept donated appliances, books, clothing, furniture, working electronics, food, tools, toys, and more. Please call ahead to confirm hours of operation and acceptable items.You can also check with your local schools and daycare centers, as they may need gently used toys, books, magazines, computers, office and party supplies or miscellaneous items for crafts.

Free Store

The Free Store helps neighbors share unused items with each other instead of leaving them in storage or throwing them away.

How to donate:

Donations are made during store hours through a check-in process with the volunteer clerks.
No drop-off donations accepted.

Please help the Free Store maintain a good relationship with their neighbors by only visiting them during open hours.
