Household Hazardous Waste Material Guidelines

HHW Home Collection Program
  • Program only available to residents of Thousand Oaks and unincorporated areas of Ventura County, address will be verified prior to collection.
  • Waste must be packaged securely and contained to prevent possible leaking. Electronic waste can be left out of containment.
  • Waste must be placed in a secure and accessible area (front porch, side gate etc…). Do not leave waste by the curb.
  • Waste should be left out by 7 am on the provided collection day. Residents will not need to be present for the collection to take place. A receipt of the collection will be left at the residents.
  • Unacceptable waste that is found will be left with the resident with a written explanation.
  • Service is offered on a first come first serve appointment basis. Service per home is once per quarter.
  • Up to 15 gallons or 120 pounds per household.
  • As an alternative, the household hazardous waste facility will be open weekly by appointment.

Adhesives & ResinsGlues, caulk, roofing tar, wax paste, grease, and joint compound
Aerosol Spray CansAny aerosol spray cans of paints, cleaners, lubes, pesticides, butane, and camping fuel (any size)
AntifreezeVehicle antifreeze/coolant
Automotive SuppliesPolishes, fluids, and gasoline (no automotive parts)
BatteriesLead acid “auto battery” or small household batteries (place each battery in a clear plastic bag or tape terminals to protect against short circuits)
CleanersNon-aerosol kitchen and bathroom cleaners (e.g., drain cleaner, ammonia, bleach, soaps, detergents such as acids and caustics)
Electronic WasteComputers, laptops, computer accessories, tablets, cell phones, cords, USB hubs, flash drives, devices with screens
FertilizersGeneral garden fertilizers
Fire ExtinguishersOnly fire extinguishers that are the size of a 2L soda bottle or smaller
Fluorescent LightsFluorescent light tubes and small CFL “bulbs”
Hobby SuppliesGlues and paints
Home-Generated Sharps WasteSharps, such as hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, auto-injectors such as EpiPens (empty), and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications, contained in U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared sharps containers
Motor OilVehicle motor oil and used oil filters
PropanePropane tanks
PesticidesNon-aerosol garden pesticides, herbicides, wood preservatives and finishes
Paints & StainsLatex, oil-based paints, stains, lacquer, urethanes, and primers (non-spray paints)
SolventsNon-aerosol petroleum solvents, paint thinners, mineral spirits, lubricants, turpentine, acetone, alcohol, and gasoline

*State law restricts the transportation of more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle
