Your grandparents or parents most likely spent most of their lives dumping all of their waste into one bin that was destined for the landfill. Times have changed. Recycling is now a normal part of everyday life. Companies like Athens Services have made major investments to reduce the environmental impact of landfills.

This is especially important in Southern California, where millions of people live, often in close proximity to landfills. How to handle and where to store waste is an ongoing issue, and the task of diverting it to minimize impacts to the environment is evolving. Athens Services is committed to leading the way.

 A Responsible Way Forward

Over the past several decades, Athens has built an extensive infrastructure of processing and recovery facilities designed to reduce environmental impacts of landfills. For example, the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Sun Valley was designed and built with the most advanced technology to divert recyclable material from landfills.

The Sun Valley MRF is completely enclosed to provide a barrier between its processing line and the community. The enclosed building helps to responsibly control the environment within and outside of the facility. The design of the enclosed MRF reduces noise and pollution and provides air and waste filtration systems to reduce dust and smell.

Diversion Diligence

Athens takes pride in its diversion efforts and works hard to deliver results. After waste is collected and taken to Athens facilities, the recyclables that are baled for market are exceptionally clean per industry standards. Athens is selective in choosing partners and vendors to ensure that they share in the same commitment to achieving real reductions to their environmental impact.

In addition to recycling, Athens has established extensive food rescue infrastructure and local partners with reliable organizations like Foodcycle LA, Hollywood Food Coalition, St. Francis Center, Beacon House and many more. These partnerships ensure that edible food is diverted away from landfills and redirected into the hands of people facing food insecurity.

Committed to Community

Athens prioritizes partnering with vendors that process recyclable material in the United States. This commitment leads to economic growth and supports local processing facilities. It also has a positive impact on pollution by reducing emissions and using facilities that have to abide by more stringent United States environmental protection laws.

Pursuing environmental justice includes protecting all communities from environmental hazards. This is a profound responsibility, as all people deserve to live with safe and clean surroundings. Athens’ commitment to the environment and community is a keystone for all that they do, reflected in the services they provide to customers, the design and operation of their facilities, their outreach and education initiatives, and the safe work environment for their employees. This dedication is embedded in the company culture, The Athens Way – Service, People, and the Environment.
