Empowering Growth: How Liz Deleon Shapes Professional Development at Athens

Waste and recycling professionals work hard every day to protect the environment for all of us. We’ve all seen the drivers who collect our waste and recycling, but there are many more workers behind the scenes. All of them deserve our thanks for the work they do.

Empowering Growth: How Liz Deleon Shapes Professional Development at Athens

Athens Services proudly recognizes Liz Deleon for Women’s History Month

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions and impact women have made throughout history. While waste and recycling services have traditionally been seen as a male-dominated industry, women have created a space for themselves to build thriving careers, step into leadership roles, and drive the future of the industry. At Athens, we take pride in having courageous and powerful women who not only shape our workforce, but also make an impact in the communities we serve.

Talent Development Manager Liz Deleon

Athens Team Member since 2013

Throughout her 17-year waste industry career, Liz has actively driven her own professional growth, creating pathways to advancement through continuous self-improvement and initiative. She first started as a receptionist, gaining experience with proposal development, drafting meeting agendas, and providing customer service support. This early experience ultimately led her to join Athens’ customer service team 11 years ago, which later led to a role as a Customer Service Trainer.

One of Liz’s proudest achievements was creating Athens’ first Customer Service onboarding curriculum—a training program that remains in use today. Her passion for ongoing professional development paved the way for her to become the first member of Athens’ Talent and Development team, where she continues to create opportunities and resources for team members to enhance their skills.

“I never initially thought about working in the waste industry, but having the right mentors and opportunities led me here—and I’m forever grateful,” Liz reflects. “It has been a great experience. I couldn’t ask for anything more and I’m proud of this journey I’m on. My career here has been so rewarding; I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

As a testament to the success of women in the industry, Liz encourages others to embrace opportunities with confidence.

“Our industry is constantly evolving and there’s plenty of room for strong women to make a lasting impact.”

Liz earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice from California State University, Fullerton. A West Covina resident for 20 years, she shares her home with her energetic four-year-old dachshund, Sonny. She is also a proud godmother to five children—Christopher (24), Monet (10), Zara and Zari (6), and Zayden (3). In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, journaling, meditation, and cheering on the LA Lakers and Dodgers.
