From Teacher to Sustainability Leader: How Angie Park Found Her Calling at Athens Services

Waste and recycling professionals work hard every day to protect the environment for all of us. We’ve all seen the drivers who collect our waste and recycling, but there are many more workers behind the scenes. All of them deserve our thanks for the work they do.

From Teacher to Sustainability Leader: How Angie Park Found Her Calling at Athens Services

Athens Services proudly recognizes Angie Park for Women’s History Month

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions and impact women have made throughout history. While waste and recycling services have traditionally been seen as a male-dominated industry, women have created a space for themselves to build thriving careers, step into leadership roles, and drive the future of the industry. At Athens, we take pride in having courageous and powerful women who not only shape our workforce, but also make an impact in the communities we serve.

Lead Recycling Coordinator Angie Park

Athens Team Member since 2018

Angie’s career is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and deep passion for sustainability. Originally a teacher from South Korea, she came to the US in 2004 after marrying her husband. Faced with the uncertainty of starting a new life, Angie took on various roles, including teaching Korean language classes and providing Korean translation services, which eventually grew into roles as a Logistics Coordinator and Executive Assistant.

Through her sister-in-law and friends at church, Angie found an opportunity in the waste industry as a Recycling Coordinator. With a passion for sustainability and lifelong teaching experience, it was the perfect fit. In 2018, she was recruited by Athens and has since dedicated herself to championing long-term sustainability practices and helping customers minimize their environmental footprint.

In 2021, Angie was promoted to Lead Recycling Coordinator where she manages major recycLA accounts and provides outreach support for other Los Angeles-based Recycling Coordinators. In her expanded role, she also works with large universities, such as California State University, Northridge and UCLA, providing waste sorting training for students and staff and strengthening overall campus sustainability efforts.

Beyond her day-to-day role, Angie is passionate about inspiring lasting change. She plays a key role training new team members at Athens’ LA North yard on how to sort waste and recycle properly. She also serves as the yard’s Zero Waste Champion, helping keep the office on track toward its sustainability goals—most notably, hosting the yard’s first zero waste BBQ last year.

As an advocate for women in the industry, Angie believes in the power of representation.

“Women’s History Month empowers women and gives us a chance to recognize those making a difference in the world. There’s plenty of room in this industry for strong women to make a lasting impact.”

A 20-year Burbank resident, Angie lives with her husband, Stephen, of 21 years, and their son, Shawn (15). In her free time, she enjoys tending to her balcony garden, participating in a backyard food growers club, exchanging plants through Facebook’s Buy Nothing groups, attending Zumba classes, and spending time with her close-knit group of girlfriends, who serve as her support system.
