Every career path has turning points. For Robert Torres, one of those moments came when he decided it was time to trade long hours and weekend shifts for a role that offered both stability and professional growth. His background in fitness, sales, and postal services gave him a diverse skill set, but it was Athens Services that gave him the opportunity to put it all to work in a meaningful way.
“I was looking for something close to home, steady work, good benefits, and early hours so that I could be home with my newborn daughter,” Robert shared. Now with a 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. schedule, he has found the work-life balance he was hoping for, and more.
Robert’s career journey wasn’t linear. His professional background included fitness, sales, and postal services – roles that often meant long hours and weekend shifts. A friend at Athens Services encouraged him to apply, and five months ago, he joined the team as a Jr. Route Auditor based out of the Salt Lake Yard.
Since then, Robert has embraced the role with enthusiasm. “I’ve been learning a lot about everything this company does for the environment and diverting waste and it’s everything,” he said, reflecting on Athens Services’ impact on local communities and the planet.
As a Jr. Route Auditor, known in the field as a “Lid Flipper,” Robert plays a vital role in supporting communities comply with California Senate Bill (SB) 1383, which mandates contamination monitoring of waste bins to divert organics waste in landfills and reduce methane emissions.
His job takes him to residential and commercial areas across cities like Riverside, Redondo Beach, Thousand Oaks, Rowland Heights, Whittier, and more, rotating through one to three cities each week.
“I like this type of work and keeping my brain moving. This is pretty much nonstop every day, so it’s perfect,” said Robert. “I also love the long drives and the views; Hermosa Beach is one of my favorites.”
While he doesn’t operate a traditional Athens Services waste collection vehicle, Robert drives a right-sided Jeep and takes pride in his career. “People have questions, but I always do my best to assure them I’m just doing my job and we’re helping the environment—that’s The Athens Way.” he said.
Robert’s career aspirations don’t stop at auditing, with a strong background in sales and a passion for community engagement, he hopes to one day move into a Sales or Recycling Coordinator role. “I enjoy educating people and working with the community,” he added.
At home in Covina, Robert enjoys life with his wife of six years, Michelle, his partner of 19 years, and their five-month-old daughter, Bailey. Outside of work, he can be found at the gym, barbecuing, watching the Los Angeles Dodgers or Chargers, or spending time with his family (sometimes squeezing in a fantasy football draft during nap time).
Robert’s story is a reminder that purpose can be found in unexpected places, and that Athens Services is a place where meaningful careers take shape.
