Carolina Guzman joined Athens Services in 2021 after completing a sustainability course at Santa Monica College, where connections led her to a role as a Recycling Coordinator (RC). Today, she supports the Brentwood and Pacific Palisades communities by rightsizing bins, promoting waste diversion, and providing recycling education to businesses, multi-family properties, and schools.
Carolina brings four years of experience in sustainability, having previously worked with tree planting initiatives, global sustainability education programs, and environmental nonprofits. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Geography with an Environmental Studies emphasis from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and is on track to complete her Sustainability Services Technician Certification by the end of this year.
A key part of Carolina’s role at Athens involves conducting waste assessments—analyzing customer needs and recommending tailored recycling education programs. She has built strong, trusted relationships with customers, ensuring they feel supported throughout their waste diversion journey.
A big part of being an RC is relaying information and building trust with our customers,” Carolina explains.
One of Carolina’s favorite aspects of her work is delivering educational presentations at local schools. Each training is carefully customized to the school’s specific needs, helping young students understand the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship. She delivers 10–15 presentations annually, with many schools inviting her back—a testament to her lasting impact.
One standout memory for Carolina is helping customers adapt to California’s SB 1383 law, which mandates organics recycling to reduce climate pollutants. Through community education, training sessions, and the distribution of kitchen pails, she helped onboard new participants and witnessed firsthand the excitement customers felt about starting the program.

Looking ahead, Carolina is eager to continue growing within Athens, with particular interest in outreach and education, government affairs, and special waste management.
“As RCs, we educate customers about hazardous waste disposal, but I have always been curious about how it is handled behind the scenes. With some lab experience under my belt, I would love to work with the special waste team in the future,” Carolina shared.
A lifelong resident of Van Nuys, Carolina lives with her parents, Veronica and Francisco, and her siblings, Francisco Jr. and Elizabeth. She hopes to welcome a furry family member—a dog—soon.
In her free time, Carolina loves exploring Los Angeles with friends and discovering new food spots. When she’s not playing tourist in her own city, she enjoys rock climbing and staying active at the gym.
With her passion for sustainability and commitment to community engagement, Carolina continues to make a positive impact at Athens Services and beyond.
